Travel Purpose: business

Positive: Cottage was cosy and perfect for Christmas time - decorations and lights helped. Log fire was the main reason for staying here. Cooking facilities were very good for Christmas dinner. Excellent OLED television and sound bar. Parking outside. Peaceful location. Dog & Badger restaurant is 1 minute walk away. Marlow and Henley are easily accessible by car with lots of shops, coffee shops and nice places to visit. Lovely walk down Ferry Lane to the River Thames.

Negative: Unexpected £35 cash fee for logs - not impressed, especially as were paying £260+ per day already. I refused to pay. Although some people may like being met by the owner upon arrival and given a tour, we would have preferred a printed guide with instructions instead. The tour lasted 40-minutes and covered lots of trivial stuff which we could have worked out ourselves. Unlike holiday homes, this was actually the owner's house and it posed problems. We never truly felt comfortable, especially with constant reminders such as photos of family members, artwork and books (see below). We were told NOT to use certain stuff in the property (like the patio heater) and, combined with the smart meter prominently flashing at us about budgets, it made us feel uneasy about using some appliances. The political leanings of the owner were made obvious. Artwork depicting hunting is prominently placed at the top of the stairs and the house is full of jingoistic literature including Winston Churchill, World War 2 and the British Empire. Again, this is where the conflict between a holiday home and the owner's actual home is an issue - given our ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, this made us uncomfortable.

Summary: Lovely BUT... this the owner's home, not a holiday home.
